I am from Chicago, Illinois, and my passion is photography and photojournalism that focuses on people and their stories. When I tell stories of people through photographs I strive to get as close to them and their stories as possible. My professional credo is simple: The closer I get, the more compelling their stories are and the more fulfilled I feel as a photographer.
For four years I worked as a photojournalist for my college’s newspaper, the Augustana Observer, and in the Augustana Marketing Department’s Photo Bureau. As the head photographer on the Observer, I pushed myself to experiment with a wide range of culturally and ethnically diverse stories that connected the readers – as well as myself – to various regions and countries in the world. My photojournalistic projects took me to many places around the globe, including Washington D.C., the U.S.-Mexico border and Krakow, Poland, where I documented the 2009 Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama, the struggles of undocumented immigrants in Mexico and the emotional 2010 presidential funeral of Lech Kaczynski, respectively.
The presidential inauguration photo essay and photographs of mourners in Poland garnered me three photojournalism awards from the Illinois College Press Association. The photographs from the border story as well as photographs from a Barack Obama rally were published in the Quad City Times, a major newspaper in Davenport, Iowa. The photographs that I shot for the college Photo Bureau were published in the Augustana Magazine, in online editions of news releases, and in monthly newsletters.
I have a bachelor’s degree in political science, a minor in Spanish and a heart set on improving my Polish language skills after spending a yearlong internship in Krakow.
